FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 7, 2016

DANVILLE, VA – American National Bankshares Inc. (American National – NASDAQ "AMNB") is pleased to announce that its subsidiary bank, American National Bank and Trust Company, has received from SNL Financial an award for ranking as one of the nation’s 100 best-performing community banks of 2015 with $1 billion to $10 billion in assets. In this category, American National ranked as the 51st best-performing bank in the country. Four additional Virginia-based banks achieved spots, but only one of those four ranked higher than American National at number 26, and one bank from North Carolina ranked at number 25.

"I am delighted to accept this prestigious award from SNL Financial on behalf of American National, and I appreciate all the hard work of our employees and the support of our shareholders and communities, which led to this national achievement," said Jeffrey V. Haley, President and Chief Executive Officer of American National. "Remaining a top-performing community bank is important to us so that we may continue providing premier 21st century financial solutions to our customers, profitable results to our shareholders, charitable support to our communities and rewarding careers for our employees."

For these rankings, S&P Global Market Intelligence, the firm that conducted the research, defined community banks as institutions with up to $10 billion in assets and 60 or fewer offices. In order for a bank to be eligible, at least one-third of its balance sheet had to be composed of loans, less than half of which could be attributable to credit card lending. Eligible banks had to be well-capitalized according to regulatory standards and could not have a majority of revenue derived from nontraditional banking activities. Based on these criteria, 372 companies nationwide were eligible for the $1 billion-to-$10 billion ranking. Rankings were based on six core financial performance metrics that focus on profitability, asset quality and growth for the 12-month period ended Dec. 31, 2015. S&P Global Market Intelligence recognized the top performers in person at the recent SNL Community Bankers Conference in Irving, Texas. Haley accepted the award on behalf of American National.
